This week in regional energy news …
- Hurricane Sandy rocked the Northeast this week, causing power outages as far north as Maine and significant flooding and wind damage. Repair crews from Maine’s electric utilities headed to Southern New England to assist with the power restoration effort.
- Ocean Renewable Power has released a plan to install 24 underwater turbines in the Western Passage of the Bay of Fundy, just north of Eastport, Maine, in 2014.
- The planning board in Thomaston, Maine, approved the construction of three large fuel storage tanks in the town. Fabian Oil Inc. intends to construct, beginning by the end of 2013, two 20,000-gallon underground liquid fuel tanks and a 30,000-gallon aboveground propane storage tank.
- Entergy Nuclear is seeking to install a third backup diesel generator—about the size of a school bus—to provide electricity to Vermont Yankee. The diesel generators are used in the event of an emergency station blackout.
